HEAR THIS: Junior Reid “Undeniable” Mixtape

Junior Reid drop Undeniable mixtape with remixes of his hottest Hip-Hop collabs

“Undeniable” is the official Junior Reid mixtape brought to you by The Wu World Wide DJ Coalition mixed by their own selector “DJ Flipcyide”. The collection includes some of Junior Reid’s major collaborations with popular artists Fabolous, Bun B, Swizz Beats, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Alicia Keys, and more. Born as Delroy “Junior” Reid, the roots reggae artist made a name for himself as the lead singer for Grammy award-winning band Black Uhuru. As an independent vocalist, Junior Reid has enjoyed crossover success with songs “One Blood” with The Game and “This Is Why I’m Hot” alongside rapper Mims and Jamaican emcee Cham. “Undeniable” is a fitting title considering the artist’s elaborate roster of top tracks. This collection of greatest hits is exemplary of his latest work with mainstream talent in Hip-Hop, Reggae, and R&B. Reid’s undeniable voice and signature chant is synonymous with over 30 years of Dub music and culture. Audio after the jump… (more…)

Brownsville’s Own B-A-double-R-Y Kicks Ballistics Over a Foundation Riddim

BRNGTN is a BK-based rapper who describes his style as “Experimental / Hip Hop / Reggae.” Considering how much wack rapping has been done over reggae beats, getting it this right is somewhat of an experiment. His rhymes connect because they avoid cliche and get right to the heart of the “Everyday Struggle” between good and evil that each of us goes through. Throw that over a hard-hitting version of the “Unchained” riddim and you can’t lose. This tune also supports my theory that remakes of a foundation riddim tracks should be in harmony with the concept of the original song. The musicians played the riddim that way for a reason.  (more…)

Performing Tracks From Distant Relatives Live For The First Time

Last night’s show at the Highline Ballroom was sold out for weeks in advance, and when the time came for the Distant Relatives to come together, the energy was at a peak. Even the New York Times was paying attention to this long anticipated collaboration between Damian Jr. Gong Marley and Nasty Nas. And although most of the songs on the set list had never been performed in public before, they proved had no trouble moving the crowd. Both artists had their own solo sets—Damian performed his father’s classic “No More Trouble” on a night when all of Jamaica was thinking the same thing, and Nas ran through a medley of hits including “Made U Look,” and a motherland remix of “One Mic” accompanied only by hand drums. His biggest forward of the night came during the “alimony” lyrics at the end of “Strong Will Continue” which segued perfectly into “Hate Me Now.” But at the end of the night, it was all about love…
