Brand new foundation selection off Stephen “Ragga” Marley’s highly anticipated Revelation Part 2: The Fruit of Life. Sean Kingston Gets Back to His Jamaican Roots

Sean Kingston’s 10 Favorite Reggae Songs—PLUS  His New Tune w Busta Rhymes

Ever since Sean Kingston first burst on the music scene as a teenage pop sensation with a runaway debut hit “Beautiful Girls,” we’ve been hearing how he grew up in Jamaica and his music was influenced by reggae. As hard as we listened we never really heard much evidence of that influence beyond song titles like “Fire Burning.” But that seems to be changing with his new album, Back 2 Life, SK’s first full-length project since he sustained serious insuries in a jet-ski accident. The first indication was the lead-off single “Shotta Luv” feautring 2 Chainz. And then we stopped by his record-listening in NYC and heard a straight-up dancehall track featuring Busta Rhymes. Sean seemed to like it so much he played it like three times in a row. The next day we asked him to run down his ten favorite reggae and dancehall tracks—and we are not mad at the selections. He even says he wants to work with Shabba Ranks! So hit the jump to learn the half that’s never been told about Mr. Kingston. Videos After The Jump… (more…)

Jay-Z Samples Sizzla on “Magna Carta Holy Grail”

Jigga’s Track “Crown” is only the latest rap jam to rework Kalonji’s hit “Solid As A Rock”

Whether or not you bought a new Samsung phone, you’re probably listening to Magna Carta Holy Grail right now. Jay-Z’s 12th studio album  leaked shortly after his exclusive app crashed, short-circuiting a multi-million-dollar promo plan. Oh well—meet the #NewRules, same as the #OldNewRules. More importantly, you may already have noticed that track #8, a song called “Crown,” opens with a long, ghostly slowed-down sample of  Sizzla’s 2002 hit “Solid As A Rock,” taken from his classic Bobby Digital–produced album, Da Real Thing. The Jay-Z tune, Produced by Travi$ Scott and 16-year-old newcomer WundaGirl, has folks buzzing about Magna Carter dissing sports agent Scott Boras. But for reggae lovers, it’s all about the continuing trend of major rap releases sampling dancehall tunes. Like many top dancehall artists, Sizzla has collaborated with rap stars in the past—most notably on his duets with Foxy Brown and Dipset. But more than any other song in Sizzla’s vast catalog, “Solid As A Rock” remains his best known release in hip-hop circles. Who can’t relate to a tune whose first words are “They can’t keep a good man down”? Click through the gallery above to revisit all the various rap versions of this Sizzla classic.

Kalonji Speaks On The Motherland, The Messiah, Losing Fattis and Finding Snoop Lion

Sizzla’s new album The Messiah finds Sizzla near the heights of his creative powers. This new set of tunes harkens back to some of his greatest works Black Woman and Child and Da Real Ting among them. On “Give Them A Ride” he sang, “Words without works can’s sustain.” Now after his bike accident, the death of his mentor Phillp “Fatis” Burris, and his time in the motherland, Sizzla seems reinvigorated and more committed than ever to works—raising awareness of the conditions of the sufferers worldwide and proclaiming His Majesty as the true and living God. Kalonji took time to speak with Boomshots on the new songs, life after Fatis and his next plans. Run it: Interview by Rob Marriott After The Jump… (more…)
