  • Busy Signal In Beast Mode

    Busy Signal In Beast Mode

Busy Signal’s “All In One,” stands as the only dancehall freestyle  fused over 12 classic hip hop beats. In this 2014 song, Busy chops it up vocally and lyrically over each beat, as if competiting for a black belt.   The song trending heavily on social media, a year later, really highlights Busy Signal’s talent. He adds, “Don’t try this at home or the studio or you will have to do it live too,” reminding the music community that each artist in the dancehall genre is an individual; no need for Stereo-Types. Eddie Murphy Roots Reggae

Edward Regan “Eddie” Murphy ranks as the 4th highest paid actor in the United States. Making people laugh out loud, comes second nature to this comedian. The actor from Bushwick, Brooklyn, even masters the art of playing multiple roles in the same movie; including fan favorite, “Coming to America.” He’s dabbled in music for years, but Murphy gets serious with  reggae in 2015.  More After The Jump…

  • Troubling Questions Raised by the Riff Raff, Snoop & Collie Buddz Collab

Troubling Questions Raised by the Riff Raff, Snoop & Collie Buddz Collab

So… Another Rapper’s Dabbling in Dancehall?

This past Friday, you may have noticed all those hipster blogs breathlessly reporting that Riff Raff aka Jody Highroller had “gone reggae.” OK, fair enough—these “Yankee rappers dabbling in dancehall” posts are surefire crowd pleasers. Why should we even be surprised when a kid from Houston born Horst Christian Simco signs with Mad Decent and decides to switch up his bugged-out raw flow and try singing over a reggae beat? But can we honestly claim that the guy has “gone reggae.” I mean, what ever happened to Snoop Lion? When Big Homie first aappeared on the Strictly Boomshots show, he was all about that Rasta life. Now he turns up on a reggae track produced by The Cataracs (the duo who made “Like A G6”) rappin’ like Snoop Dogg? Riff Raff’s in Jody Highroller mode, Snoop’s in Dogg mode… Hold up—we’re getting confused. Wasn’t Snoop suposed to be Bob Marley reincarnated or something? Thank God Collie Buddz sounds like himself on this one.  Audio After the Jump… (more…)

The Lion’s Coming With That Heat
    snoop
We’ve been hearing about this album that Snoop Lion has been working on with Major Lazer for months now, and today Reincarnated is finally here. Was it worth the hype? After hearing the full thing, we have to say yes. There are definitely some bangers on this album that real reggae fans need in their life. Standout tracks include “Fruit Juice” featuring Mr. Vegas, “Smoke The Weed” featuring Collie Buddz, and “Remedy” featuring Chris Brown and Busta Rhymes. Oh, and how could I forget “Boulevard” featuring Jahdan Blakkamore? But don’t take my word for it, check the full album preview and then go to iTunes, buy Reincarnated, and support reggae music. The audio petition for the crack down of gun violence finally got its visual treatment presented nicely in a predominantly black and white package directed by Jesse Terrero. • HEAR THIS: Snoop Lion Ft. Cori B & Drake “No Guns Allowed”

Snoop Enlists His Daughter Cori B And Drake As They Plead For An End to The Gunplay snoop

Having previewed this track Last week on the Conan O’Brien Show, big Snoop Lion drops the next single off his Reincarnated album entitled “No Guns Allowed,” which Snoop has repeatedly called his favorite on the album. It’s certainly a departure from Snoop Dogg’s “187 on an undercover cop” days.  The track is a plea for the removal of guns due to the increased, senseless killings of innocents especially children. To further drive home the seriousness of the song Snoop recruits his own daughter Cori B whose voice provides the perfect backdrop for Drake’s heartfelt verse, which was apparently inspired by a 2012 shooting in Toronto that left two dead and dozens injured. Snoop Lion, Major Lazer & Mavado Mash Up Viceland at SXSW

Last week at SXSW, Snoop Dogg made history as he headlined Cashmere Agency’s “LIONFEST: A celebration of Reincarnated” at VICELAND, performing for the first time as Snoop Lion. In front of 2,000 fans, Snoop showed off his new reggae/dancehall repertoire, delivering songs like “So Long,” “La La La,” “No Guns Allowed,” and “Lighters Up,” from his forthcoming Reincarnated album (set for an April 23 release on RCA / Sony). Snoop Lion Premieres Reincarnated Then Mashes Up SXSW w Major Lazer & Mavado

Yesterday was a big day for the man called Snoop Lion. First his film Reincarnated had its official U.S. premiere at the Paramount Theater in Austin Texas. (The film opens nationwide today; check SnoopLion.com for show times and locations.) Then later that night he headlined Lionfest at SXSW’s VICEland stage, sharing the bill with Major Lazer—the team that produced his Reincarnated album—and Mavado, who collabos with Snoop on the tune “Lighters Up,” as well as DJ Max Glazer of BKNY’s Federation Sound. After all the debates, the skeptics, and the naysayers had spoken their minds, it all came down to Snoop Lion showing what he could do on stage for the first time ever. And the capacity crowd was definitely showing love to the Lion, who transformed into Snoop Dogg and back again many times through the night. Aside from performing cuts from the Reincarnated album like “La La La,” “Here Comes The King,” “Lighters Up,” and “No Guns Allowed,” Snoop also kicked reggae remixes of classics like “Gin & Juice,” “Drop It Like it’s Hot” and “Young Wild & Free.” He also covered Bob Marley’s “Could You Be Loved” as well as “Funkin’ For Jamaica” as well as bringing out Daz and Kurupt of Tha Dogg Pound for some straight-up Death Row /DPG rap jams. But Lionfest wasn’t limited to reggae or rap— Snoop even did straight-up versions of “Jump Around” by House of Pain and Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock & Roll.” Check the photo gallery above. Snoop Lion’s Dancehall Documentary Continues Its Gaza Trend
    TOMMYLEEBOOM
The first two episodes of Noisey Jamaica’s dancehall series focused on Vybz Kartel and Popcaan, and the Gaza trend on part three, which features “the Anti-Christ of the dancehall,” Tommy Lee Sparta. His “Uncle Demon” persona has made him easily the most controversial character in Jamaican music, hot with the kids and dissed by older dancehall diehards. In a dimly lit room, Tommy Lee opens up in this interview. Be afraid. But it’s not all fun and games and scary makeup. The former Leroy Russell says he can’t return to his home in MoBay because of his success, as police have now branded him a don. “I can’t even get to see my kids them,” he says. “I can’t go to my place. I have to let them come visit me at a hotel when I have shows and those things. They don’t want me to go into my place. They say I should stay away from there and I don’t know why.”  Video After The Jump…
