    Badda and ZJ Liquid are taking their barrel movement to a worldwide level. “A barrel is a traditional thing that keeps connections with people overseas,” ZJ Liquid explained to Reshma B in her latest Murda She Wrote column for Tidal. “You can put a lot into a barrel. When you get a barrel, you good for six months. You don’t need to buy anything — you got rice, ketchup, beans, peas, syrup, soap, clothes. It’s very helpful to families, and people can share with more than just their immediate relatives. Sometimes people don’t even have food, and you can give them something out of a barrel so they can cook dinner.” Ever since the release of “Barrel” this past February, Badda General and ZJ Liquid’s conversational collab has taken on a life of its own—being reposted all over social media and buzzing in the streets of Jamaica. “It just become a thing,” said Liquid. “Everywhere I go people are like, ‘Yo Liquid, what can I get out of the barrel?’” The song’s popularity prompted other artists to call in hopes of jumping on a remix. “A lot of people reached out,” said Badda. “But in my brain it didn’t make sense for an artist to send a barrel from Jamaica to Jamaica.” When U.K. dancehall star Stylo G called to say he loved the song, Badda jumped at the chance to collab — especially since some listeners have pointed out certain similarities in their vocal tone and lyrical flow. “Stylo is a great artist,” said Badda, who resisted “outside forces” who tried to draw them into a clash. “For someone to compare me and Stylo, that is not a minus, that is definitely a plus. I am ego-free,” he added. “I am just here to make music and put smiles on people’s face. We just unite and kill the noise.” Gold Up, the song’s producer, had a link to Ghanaian dancehall star Shatta Wale, who also jumped on the remix, adding some African flavor to the musical barrel. “I have actually never met none of them in real life,” Badda admitted, “but music is a thing that connects all of us together.” Video After The Jump…

    Rodigan Invites A Few Friends Over to Get Things Poppin’ in LondonTown

    Vauxhall’s Fire was burnin’ up last Friday night as David Rodigan played host to his annual RamJam Xmas bash. The lineup of DJs and artists included some of the names that have paved the way for the UK underground scene from yesterday until tomorrow and beyond. The crowd went crazy to a mixture of music that has been the soundtrack of the London streets over the past few years—including jungle, DnB, reggae,  dancehall & dubstep and everything in between. Jungle masters Congo Natty were on great form, set the night alight with their selections. They started their set with Bob Marley’s acoustic “Redemption Song,” and trust & believe that was the calm before the storm ahead as they launched into a mix of jungle & DnB classics. UK dancehall artist Stylo G stepped onto stage and got the room singing to “Call Me a Yardie” and  “Soundbwoy”—they even knew the lyrics to his new tune “Move Back.” David Rodigan dropped bombs throughout his set—the man’s collection of dubplates has been next level for years, but then he dropped a brand new exclusive dub for Cham and Damian Marley’s first ever combination, a thing called “Fighter.” By the time Shy FX hit the decks the room was in a frenzy.     Stylo knows a few things about original dons in the game having soaked up plenty of firsthand experience  from his dad Poison Chang. He knows what it takes to stand amongst the best in the biz and on his new tune ”Move Back” he pays respect to some to the pioneers in the  game. Stylo himself has become somewhat of a pioneer fusing the original dancehall sounds with the sounds of the London underground and now stands at the forefront of the UK dancehall scene, I guess they don’t call him the lyrical badman for nothing. As always Stylo’s put has stammed his signature style on the tune which is catchy as hell. “Come trouble yourself with the London don,” he chats—and for those who are gonna be in the vicinity, tonight Stylo will be unleashing his swag  at  at Rodigan’s Ram Jam Xmas party —which is sure to be, well, rammmm jammmed! Don’t be surprised if this Stylo selection finds its way to the top playlist of your holiday party too!     This Weekend the UK celebrated the 18th staging of the MOBO—Music Of Black Origin—Awards. This year Scotland’s capital Glasgow played host and was rammed with celebrities galore—from Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora to So Solid Crew and Ms Dynamite. Craig David even flew in from Miami to present an award. It’s been an exciting year for reggae and the nominees for the Best Reggae Act category were right on point for 2013 making this category a real nail-biter. The competition was tough between Mavado, Stylo G, Sean Paul, Popcaan and Tarrus Riley—and as they say “may the best man win.” So congrats to Sean Paul for taking that home. This makes it a cool 3 times for Sean Paul. Unfortunately Dutty Paul didn’t make it to Glasgow to receive his award in person but he did send through a video of his acceptance speech—RRRRRRRRRR! (always wonder how the organisers keep that under wraps!) Other highlights from the event included Tinie Tempah taking home ‘Best UK Hip Hop/Grime,’ Rudimental taking home “Best Album,” Fuse ODG taking home “Best African Act” Naughty Boy Taking Home “Best Video” Wiley taking home “Best Male Act” and Laura Mvula taking home “Best R&B/Soul Act” & “Best Female.” Check here for full list. All in a days work—back with the MOBOs next year!     The Soundbwoy has been making some noise for a minute—teaming up with 3Beat and dropping some musical bombhells. And it looks like the noise is being heard loud and clear. The MOBO Awards recently announced their shortlist of nominees for the 18th ceremony, and Stylo G bagged not one but two nods: ‘Best Reggae Act’ and ‘Best New Comer’.
