MoBay Artists Shine at Sumfest 2018
Rygin King, Teejay, and Tommy Lee Rip Dancehall Night In Front Of Hometown Crowd Red Stripe Reggae Sumfest has been a world-class music festival since its inception in 1993, but the 2018 edition of the Greatest Reggae Show on Earth was more than that: it was a chance for redemption in Montego Bay. Since January of 2018, Jamaica’s tourist mecca had been under a state of emergency due to a spike in gang violence. While the military crackdown did manage to reduce the killings, it wasn’t great for the tourism industry. Sumfest has traditionally provided a boost to the local economy each summer, but this year they did more than that—they brought hope back to the Second City. A stellar performance by three of MoBay’s most promising artists—Tommy Lee, Teejay, and Rygin King—sent a message to the streets that there is another way to progress in life. In the words of Downsound Entertainment CEO Josef Bogdanovich. “It’s really about stop the killing and let’s get real and try to make some money and live a good life.” Video, Photos, and Full Story After the Jump… (more…) -
Gaza Slim’s Redemption Song
April 3, 2014 was a melancholy day for dancehall fans, when Justice Lenoxx Campbell made his ruling in the murder case of Clive “Lizard” Williams. Adidja Palmer aka Vybz Kartel was sentenced to life, with the possibility of parole after 35 years. In this case, no body was ever found and the case was decided mostly on text message evidence from telephones seized from the accused. Attorneys Christian Tavares-Finson and his father Tom Tavares-Finson, both lawyers who defended the dancehall artist, are already working on an appeal. Vybz Kartel associates Shawn Campbell aka Shawn Storm and Kahira Jones also received life sentences with the possibility of parole after 25 years. Shane Williams, another associate was acquitted on all charges in this murder case but charged for another murder case. Vanessa Saddler aka Gaza Slim, Vybz Kartel’s protégé was charged with a lesser charge, obstruction of justice, for filing a false incident report about being robbed at knife-point by Clive “Lizard” Williams, just five days after Kartel was charged with murder, in an effort to pervert justice. As Kartel fans gathered outside of the Jamaican Supreme Court for the 58-day trial, Gaza Slim showed her presence and undying love for the World Boss. More After The Jump…

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Vybz Kartel Feat. Popcaan, Shawn Storm & Gaza Slim “Empire Forever”
Me Say Gaza, Me Say Gaza
News broke late last night that Vybz Kartel and his cohorts, after much deliberation were found guilty of the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams. Even though the evidence was stacked against them the news was still met with shock and public outcry, many more concerned about the state of the music than the man. With that in mind we take a look back to a time when Kartel had a firm grip on Dancehall and recruited long time friend Shawn Storm and rising stars Popcaan and Gaza Slim into what was then known as the Empire. With a solid team behind him and the now debunked “Teacha’s Pet” reality show ahead, the future looked even brighter for the Gaza general. Video After The Jump… (more…)

Vybz Kartel Speaks From Behind Bars: “Betrayed Is The Order of the Day”
A Few Words From The Worl’ Boss
Earlier this week Tads Records released a triple album entitled Kartel Forever: The Trilogy. The album includes 60 tracks, ranging from some of Kartel’s most popular hits—such as “Touch A Button,” “Benz Punany,” “Cake Soap,” “Ramping Shop” ft. Spice, and “Straight Jeans and Fitted”—to new and unreleased songs such as “School,” on which Kartel advises youths “don’t bleach your face,” and “Business,” which has been mashing up dances across Jamaica—and also stirring up controversy about whether the artist has been recording music from his jail cell. (Kartel has been incarcerated for nearly two years, charged with two murders. He’s since been found not guilty on the first of these cases, and he expects to face trial for the second case this November.) “I want to thank all my supporters for your love and unfailing support throughout these trying times,” Kartel stated in a press release accompanying the new album. “Even though I am incarcerated, I am still up to the time. This album shows that I get stronger with each passing second. Tad’s plus Adidjaheim Records is a sick formula and the result is Kartel Forever: Trilogy. Worl’ Boss fullstop!” To help support his album roll-out Kartel agreed to answer a few questions relayed via reliable links close to the artist. But just when things seemed to be looking up for the dancehall “Worl’ Boss,” his cell was raided last week by police investigating the murder of producer Patrick “Roach” Samuels, Kartel’s former road manager. Two cellular phones, a DVD player, and thumb drives were confiscated and any hopes for a dialogue with Kartel seemed to be dashed. But just this morning we received answers to some of the questions we submitted prior to the police raid. We are publishing them exactly as they came to us without editing. Tommy Lee and the Sparta Clan at Reggae Sumfest
Uncle Demon Storms Dancehall Night—And He’s Rolling Deep
Tommy Lee was raised in the Flankers section of Montego Bay, so every time he touches the stage at Reggae Sumfest he gets much love from the hometown crowd. Last year was his first solo set on the Greatest Reggae on Earth, so this year Tommy had to tun it up by bringing along his whole Sparta Clan. Taking a leaf out of Di Teachas’ playbook, Tommy Lee is leveraging his talent to big up the next generation of dancehall stars. Just after he tore down Catherine Hall in his black facemask, spiked cape, and demonic red contact lenses, Uncle Demon took time out to kick it with Reshma B and introduce her to the Sparta Clan. WATCH THIS: Tommy Lee & Spartan Army “Real Bad Gyal” / “Di Creature” Official Video
Di Creature Is Coming—Beware!
Tommy Lee is back and this time he’s bringing his whole Spartan Army: Jimbo Sparta, plus Tabeta Cshae, Stylish, and Destiny. [Click through the gallery above to get familiar.] So what if the “army” consists of just one other dude plus three hot girls? They’re still an army—plus they’re all demons. The Spartan Army just dropped a new double-barreled video for “Real Bad Gyal” and “Di Creature,” the lead singles from UIM Records’ eerie new riddim. At the top of the video, Stylish, Destiny, and Tabeta rock zombie gear as they break down what it means to be a “Real Bad Gyal,” from busting guns to, um, biting necks. (Sidebar: Did you ever make love to a demon?) In the second half of the clip, Tommy Lee and his sparring partner Jimbo Sparta take it back to the future on “Di Creature,” which looks more like a summer blockbuster than a typical music video. Actually it’s like watching a midnight movie double feature at the multiplex in less than five minutes: First a sexy lady vampire saga followed by an epic outer-space laser-beam battle flick. Gozu Musiq and Mental Chung Creative Lab took things to the next next level here. Just don’t let the scary masks and special effects fool you, Sparta ah no plaything. “We appear like Katrina / Worse than Hiroshima.” (Click Video After The Jump… (more…)

HEAR THIS: Tommy Lee “Bun Nu Nu”
Ever Wondered What It Would Be Like to Dance With The Devil?
It might not be a night in with Satan, but whining for Uncle Demon could give you a little flavour of what goes down in such a situation. Tommy Lee has the girls going down on his latest track, “Bun Nu Nu” on Gutty Bling’s big bad “Sneak Preview” riddim. Tommy gives us a sneak peak on what he likes doing behind closed doors as he demands the “pun-nu-nu-nu-nu-nu-na-na…” And his gyal seems eager to please. You know what’s next: “Let me rub pon di edge… Gyal me wan you to eat off me hood.” Sounds like the Spartan likes to give as much as he receives. Maybe that’s how he earned those wings he’s been growin’! Audio After The Jump… (more…)
