HEAR THIS: Ape Drums ft. Major Lazer & Busy Signal “The Way We Do This”

    H-Town Riddim Master At Work

While Major Lazer might be the biggest names in EDM to flex dancehall riddims and vibes in their tracks, they’re far from the only ones. Houston, Texas’ Ape Drums has been at this for a bit, describing his sound as essentially taking his EDM projects and making them into bigger dancehall riddims. His experimental EDM/dancehall hybrid has been a hit, landing him on some of the hottest EDM labels out, including Skrillex’s OWSLA and Diplo’s Mad Decent imprints. For his latest, he links up with Diplo’s Major Lazer crew and the legendary Busy Signal for “The Way We Do This,” wisely flipping Tony Kelly’s Bookshelf Riddim (made famous by everyone from Sasha on “Dat Sexy Body” to Sean Paul with his classic “Deport Them”) and turning it into a banger that will light up any dance going down this summer.  Audio After The Jump… (more…)

  • Machel Montano Rules Carnival With “Waiting on the Stage”—Is He Leading Soca Down The Road To EDM?

    Machel Montano Rules Carnival With
“Waiting on the Stage”—Is He Leading Soca Down The Road To EDM?

Trinidad & Tobago’s “Minister of Road” Takes Third Consecutive Road March Title

Trinidadian soca superstar Machel Montano has won his third consecutive road march title. Since 1932, the Trinidad Carnival Committtee has awarded the prize to the  musical composition played most often at the “judging points” along the parade route throughout Port of Spain during the big carnival celebration. This is the eighth win of Montano’s career. Not since Tambu hit the trifecta in 1988, 89, and 1990 has one artist dominated the competition three years in a row. The winning tune, “Waiting on the Stage,” was produced by Trini production squad Badjohn Republic. But with its strong EDM influence, it almost sounds like it could be a Major Lazer record.  Check out the tune and judge for yourself. Video After The Jump… (more…)

    MrEasyLilysBoomshots

Last week on the Strictly Boomshots show we were blessed by the presence of a true veteran in the dancehall business. Talking about the man called Mr. Easy aka Easy like Sunday morning. You know his tunes like “She Drives Me Crazy” on the big bad Buyout riddim. And you heard his latest release, the summer banger “Fly Away” Ft. Beenie Man right here on Boomshots. But did you know that he used to kick it with Christopher Wallace back in Jamaica before he grew up to become Biggie Smalls? Or that he won Showtime at the Apollo? Or that he was featured on a Big Daddy Kane album? Half the story has never been told.

You already know Beenie as the King of the Dancehall and the Girls Dem Sugar,so get to know Malica Martin, the first female vocalist signed to K. Licious Music Group. Born in Brooklyn, New York to Jamaican parents, Malica grew up between Kingston’s Duhaney Park and New York City. Her dad is the owner of Jamaica’s well-known ‘Love Vibration’ sound system, so it’s no surprise to see Malica pursuing a career in music. No wonder she sounds so natural flowing alongside Beenie Man on the 1st Quarters riddim. (more…)

The “other Chris Martin”… no longer just a Rising Star.

No he’s not married to Gwyneth Paltrow. This is not the Chris Martin of Coldplay. Nor is he the Christopher Martin from House Party and Kid N Play fame. But judging by his track record, the Jamaican crooner Christopher Martin is already much more than a Rising Star.
