  • Reasoning with Garfield “Chin” Bourne: “Authentic Sound Clash Culture is in Jeopardy”

    Reasoning with Garfield “Chin” Bourne:
“Authentic Sound Clash Culture is in Jeopardy”

Keeping Sound System Safe From The Culture Vultures

As co-founder of Irish & Chin, one of the most respected reggae promotion companies in the world, Garfield “Chin” Bourne has left his mark on the music industry and popular culture as a whole. He is the founder of SoundChat Radio and a range of media ventures, but Chin may be best known as a leading advocate of sound system culture at a time where hardcore soundclash audience is aging, and the appropriation of dancehall culture is not limited to international artists reworking Jamaican rhythms to hit the pop charts. The rise of EDM music and the success of the recent Red Bull Culture Clash highlight the impact of Jamaican sound systems on worldwide pop music, even as the originators of the culture who are still active tend to be marginalized.  Interview After The Jump… (more…)

  • Soundbwoy Burial of the Year: Welcome To Jamrock Reggae Cruise’s Soundclash at Sea

Soundbwoy Burial of the Year: Welcome To Jamrock Reggae Cruise’s Soundclash at Sea

    Keeping Soundclash Culture Afloat

There are many reasons to love the Welcome To Jamrock Reggae Cruise—the performances, the fans, the total immersion in what the one and only Shinehead has likened to a “Rub-a-dub Disneyland”—but WTJRC’s unfailing support of sound system culture may be the best reason of all. A plethora of legendary sounds—from King Jammy’$ to Stone Love to Metro Media, Bodyguard, Black Scorpio, Bass Odyssey, Downbeat The Ruler, Renaissance Disco, and Mighty Crown—have juggled on board Damian Marley’s cruise over the years, presenting reggae and dancehall music with an intensity of feeling and cultural correctness that no normal disc jockey or cyber playlist could hope to replicate. Moreover, for the past two years WTJRC has presented the world’s first ever Soundclash at Sea, showcasing the excitement of  top-ranking battle-tested selectors going tune for tune in a musical death match with support from respected clash promoters Irish & Chin. Exposing international reggae fans to authentic hardcore sound clash is important for many reasons, especially at a time when Red Bull’s Culture Clash can fill 20,000 capacity arenas. So as Boomshots continues our 2016 Year in Review, we have to acknowledge the rise of the Soundclash at Sea, which is both a burial and a resurrenction of sorts. Spice talks Culture Clash and Why She Doesn’t Want You To Call Her Queen of the Dancehall

Just Call The Mad Gyal “Queen of the Stage”

One day before the Red Bull Culture Clash, Reshma B sat down with  Spice for an exclusive Boomshots interview. As usual the Mad Gyal and the Reggae Girl About Town kept it 100% real. In the first segment of their epic 3-part reasoning session, they speak about Spice’s huge international fanbase, her latest tunes to touch the road, and how to do the “Indicator” dance. In the second segment, they speak about whether Vybz Kartel is the new King of the Dancehall, what that means for Beenie Man, and why she doesn’t want to be called the Queen of the Dancehall. As usual the Mad Gyal and the Reggae Girl About Town kept it 100% real. In the third and final segment of their epic reasoning session, Spice shares her thoughts on the Red Bull Culture Clash, how she will do whatever it takes to win, and why Mixpak’s dancehall lineup should not be considered “under dogs” since Jamaica originated the whole clash culture. • Quarantine Inna Dancehall: The Ebola Riddim Is So Sick

Quarantine Inna Dancehall: The Ebola Riddim Is So Sick

When Current Events Meets Dancehall: How important is the name of a riddim?

The Ebola epidemic is the largest in history, claiming numerous lives since 1976. Just recently, two Americans died from the deadly virus, upon returning from Africa. Health care workers returning to the US from altruistic service in Africa, with viral symptoms have been quarantined in isolation. Luckily,  many received treatment which proved life saving, however, Africans continue to die  in alarming numbers from the deadly virus. Since its release in November 2014, the “Ebola” riddim has become a topic of controversy in dancehall.   The infectious riddim by renowned producer, Andrew “Anju Blax” Myrie of UIM  records, features a dozen top-rated dancehall artists. In the  riddim cover art, a micrograph of an Ebola virion appears superimposed over an animated image of  Anju Blax with supinated palms. Many on social media believe the riddim should be quarantined because of the “insensitivity,” in regards to its naming. Opposers refute this argument, stating that social commentary in dancehall is a norm, What’s in a name? While the jury is still out on this complex issue,  we present six songs featured on the Ebola riddim, because from a musical stand point,  the riddim itself is well produced.  Audio After The Jump…

HEAR THIS: King Addies Presents Rodney Price AKA Bounty Killer Dubplate Mix

Addies Bad From Dem Time Till Now, Who Nuh Like It Defend It

The Biltmore Era is known as the Golden Era and most competitive period of the Sound Clash Industry extending from the late ’80s to 1996. Such clashes were kept in four major venues throughout New York City—Tilden Ballroom, Starlite Ballroom, Flamingo Ballroom and most importantly the Biltmore Ballroom. As the “Mecca” of the industry, the era contained many talented and entertaining sound systems all of which rightfully deserve their place in the history books. However, none has been more dominant and respected as King Addies. They were the sound that made upcoming selectors believe that you didn’t have to be a Jamaican based sound system to make it to the top of the industry. Of all the artists represented in their devastating dubplate collection, one loomed larger than all the others: The Warlord, a.k.a. Bounty Killer.  Audio After The Jump… (more…)

  • Tony Matterhorn Kills Them With Classics At P Diddy’s Bad Boy Sound Clash

Diddy Jetted Down To Kingston JA To Bless The Winner With $20,000 Prize Money
    TonyMatterhornBOOM
It’s not every day that Puff Daddy jets down to Jamaica to throw a soundclash. But earlier this month he did just that, with a little help from Downsound, the same folks who teamed up with Supreme Promotions to make this year’s Sting extra-hot. Word is the whole plan came together within 24 hours, but you know what they say… real Bad Boys move in silence. Diddy kicked things off by rocking a few of his classic cuts, then he was joined by Beenie, Flippa, Kippo & Ninja. (Diddy’s pretty much done it all, but he looked genuinely geeked to be rocking a stage in Kingston.) After that it was time for the big clash, and Matterhorn dealt with them wicked. Video After The Jump… (more…)

Pree The Outlook Boat Party Mix

Our peoples at The Heatwave made this remix on a boat party in Croatia this summer. We’ll let them tell the tale… “We were so inspired by the beautiful women and their amazing dancing on our Hot Wuk boat party at Outlook Festival that we made a special refix in the heat of the moment floating on the Croatian ocean. The response was crazy and we NEARLY fell off the boat from all the scandalous excitement, but luckily we survived and managed to make it home with the laptop and MP3 intact.” While you rock to this, check out RGAT’s exclusive interview with Gabriel from The Heatwave.  Audio after the jump
