    Snoop Rocks Lionfest at SXSW

Snoop Lion Premieres Reincarnated Then Mashes Up SXSW w Major Lazer & Mavado

Yesterday was a big day for the man called Snoop Lion. First his film Reincarnated had its official U.S. premiere at the Paramount Theater in Austin Texas. (The film opens nationwide today; check SnoopLion.com for show times and locations.) Then later that night he headlined Lionfest at SXSW’s VICEland stage, sharing the bill with Major Lazer—the team that produced his Reincarnated album—and Mavado, who collabos with Snoop on the tune “Lighters Up,” as well as DJ Max Glazer of BKNY’s Federation Sound. After all the debates, the skeptics, and the naysayers had spoken their minds, it all came down to Snoop Lion showing what he could do on stage for the first time ever. And the capacity crowd was definitely showing love to the Lion, who transformed into Snoop Dogg and back again many times through the night. Aside from performing cuts from the Reincarnated album like “La La La,” “Here Comes The King,” “Lighters Up,” and “No Guns Allowed,” Snoop also kicked reggae remixes of classics like “Gin & Juice,” “Drop It Like it’s Hot” and “Young Wild & Free.” He also covered Bob Marley’s “Could You Be Loved” as well as “Funkin’ For Jamaica” as well as bringing out Daz and Kurupt of Tha Dogg Pound for some straight-up Death Row /DPG rap jams. But Lionfest wasn’t limited to reggae or rap— Snoop even did straight-up versions of “Jump Around” by House of Pain and Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock & Roll.” Check the photo gallery above. VICE Defends Reggae To White People Who Don’t Like Reggae

So you’ve decided you don’t like reggae. I can respect this decision. There’s some good thinking involved in this decision. Whenever I talk to a fellow white person who has decided they don’t like reggae, they usually make the following points: 1. I don’t really smoke weed, so it doesn’t really do anything for me; 2. I find it repetitive and unvarying, two qualities I don’t appreciate in music because see point 1; 3. I am white; 4. people who are “really into reggae,” especially white people who are “really into reggae,” are annoying little dipshits, and based on social programming, I wish to avoid being seen as an annoying little dipshit; 5. Bob Marley Legends is the fucking WORST. Actually the title is Legend, but whatever; More after the jump…

  • HEAR THIS: Vybz Kartel ft. Action Bronson “Money” Remix

The Werlboss And  The Mad Albanian Genius Team Up For A Brand New Remix

“It’s all about making that money while I’m in the limelight,” said Vybz Kartel in an interview last year—before he was jailed on two counts of murder. “At the end of the day, when I retire, I want to know that I retired with enough money to take care of my family. Because I was born poor and I can die poor. But as long as my family’s okay and my kids are good, I’m good. I don’t take nothing that is happening in the music business personal. It’s just business to me. If I can capitalize on it, that’s what I’m going to do and make that extra buck.” Even now that he’s behind bars, Kartel’s business keeps going and going like the Energizer Bunny. The Werlboss just released his long-awaited book, and soon a deluxe edition of his album Kingston Story—produced last year by Mixpak Records—will be out on VICE Records, boasting a few never-before-heard tracks like “Money,” On this brand-new Dre Skull remix, it sounds like Action Bronson hit the Volcano before he stepped up to the mic—maaad.
