    Amidst outbreaks of viral pandemic and police brutality, the best thing anyone can say about 2020 is that it’s the year of Bob Marley’s 75th Birthday Celebration. And while the year has been terrible and dreadful, Bob Marley’s music has offered much-needed inspiration. The Tuff Gong’s 1984 greatest hits collection Legend has topped the charts every week since mid January when it knocked Stick Figure out of the top spot. What more relevant soundtrack for these trying times than Bob Marley. Today is July 1, International Reggae Day, and what better way to celebrate than by rediscovering one of Marley’s classic songs, “No Woman No Cry”? Today Boomshots and VIBE proudly present a brand new official music video, directed by Kristian Mercado Figueroa and shot in Jamaica and New York City. The poignant, verite visual tells the tale of a family divided by geography yet connected by love and a shared commitment to providing a better life for their youths.     American Reggae Acts Dominate 2017 Grammy Nominations

    Three Out of Six Nominees Are Based in the U.S.A.

    Earlier today The Recording Academy announced the 2017 Grammy Award nominations. Beyoncé topped all nominees with nine nods while Drake, Rihanna, and Kanye West snagged eight each. Rihanna & Drake’s dancehall cut “Work” was nominated for Record of the Year, although Drizzy’s chart-toppers “One Dance” and “Controller” were snubbed. Tory Lanez’s “Luv”—based on Tanto & Devonte’s dancehall classic “Everyone Falls In Love”—was nominated for Best R&B Song. Sia’s No. 1 single “Cheap Thrills”  featuring Sean Paul was nominated in the Best Pop Duo Performance category.     The World Boss Channels Ziggy Marley

    Described by Chronixx as a “fearless creative soul in this earth,” dancehall’s incarcerated World Boss, Vybz Kartel continues to amaze. In the past he has recorded cover versions of dancehall classics by the likes of Shabba Ranks and Grindsman, but today his cover of Ziggy Marley’s “Tomorrow People” hit iTunes. This song is perhaps even more unexpected than Kartel’s cover of The Beatles “In My Life“—since that was clearly labeled as a personal tribute. But this note-for-note cover of the 1988 breakout single from Bob Marley’s firstborn son makes a bold statement that Kartel is more than capable of performing in the reggae idiom. Depending on your age, intellect, and musical point of view, the idea of Vybz Kartel singing “if you don’t know your past you don’t know your future” may strike you as ironic, profound or both. When he first came out, shredding his Les Paul and flashing his dreadlocks, haters used to call him a Bob Marley wannabe. But the fact is Lenny had more in common with the Tuff Gong than a hairstyle. The offspring of a black mom and a Jewish dad, he grew up between a Caribbean island (Bahamas, not Jamaica) and the U.S. Although Bob spent less time in Delaware than Lenny did in NYC, the island vibe is a party of his musical identity.     Natty Dread Rides Again: Ziggy Marley’s “Fly Rasta” Tour Rocks NYC

    Before  the Fly Rasta Tour touched down at SOB’s, Ziggy Marley explored  Miss Lily’s Variety and reloaded with a veggie punch from Melvin’s Juicebox on Houston Street. The bursting-at-the-seams SOBs crowd, geared up for his arrival with  blazing musical selections of  DJ Lady Fyahramma Thomas.  Pat McKay from Sirus XM Radio brought more feminine fierceness into the building, showing her support in the crowd. Ziggy hit the stage fully energized and began the concert with the song, “Love is My Religion,” from his second solo album. The universal message disseminated through the crowd, as members of the audience shouted the lyrics in unison. “The main thing,” Ziggy said of this song, “its not the title where Ras Tafari fits into life or where Christianity fits or where Islam fits.     Bob’s Eldest Son Returns With a New Album

    Ziggy Marley is up for a Best Reggae Album Grammy next week but that doesn’t mean that the five-time Grammy winner and Reggae icon is content to just sit back and blaze a fattie. He’s recently announced plans to release his fifth studio album entitled  Fly Rasta.Produced by Ziggy with additional production from Dave Cooley (J Dilla, Silversun Pickups), the album will feature The Melody Makers including Cedella Marley, Sharon Marley and Rica Newell.  Today we look at the album’s title track, which features another Reggae icon, Daddy U-Roy, dropping his trademark DJ jive. As part of the promotion for the single, comic artist Jim Mahfood (last seen on Ziggy’s “Marijuana Man” project) did a live painting to accompany the track and it was all captured on video. “Fly Rasta” is set to drop April 15, in the mean time Check The Video After The Jump… (more…)
